In my recent experiences working in roles within retailers, teaching workshops and through devising my own retail events, I have been struck deeply by the many interactions with members of the public who have shared very personal struggles and experiences. These sharing moments, as well as my own journey with shopping, consumption and mental health have made me question deeply the role of retail and to borrow a phrase, understand what ‘retail therapy’ might truly mean.

Then I discovered mending
As I attempted to lift the weight of my mind and my belongings I turned to a basket of items, long awaiting some simple repairs. Too creatively burntout to conceive of new ideas and ‘box-fresh’ products I found some solace and consolation in mending the items I owned. It was through that simple act of mending that the missing pieces of the puzzle had become connected and I started a journey to begin healing my relationship with consuming, but also myself.
The process goes on of mending, noticing and thinking. It has brought me back to design and being creative but in a more sustainable way for myself and the planet.
